As the Red Sox entered the 1970’s, they had given the faithful some hope. Coming off a
mere miracle season just 3 years prior to the decade starting, Boston had graced their fans
with a season simply dubbed “The Impossible Dream!” From that point on, all dreams in
Bean town were now Possible! The fans truly believed that with a new decade upon them,
a new beginning was about to occur where a dastardly drought of Zero Championships
since 1918 would indeed come to an end in the 70’s. So in the heralded words of Marvin
Gaye, “Let’s Bring It On,” cried the Fenway Faithful!
The fabric of the team pretty much stayed the same in the 70’s and it was anchored by
the Captain, the great # 8, Carl Yastrzemski. He led them to the World Series in 1975
against the Reds and the only thing that stood in their way from winning it all was an Ed
Armbrister “blown interference call” in Game 3 & a “LEEphus” pitch by Bill “Spaceman”
Lee to Tony Perez in Game 7 that is still in flight somewhere over the Mass Pike. They
also finished in 2nd Place 4 times in the decade but none of those finishes were more
heartbreaking than the 1 Game Playoff loss to the Yankees in 1978 on a HR off of
Mike “Taco” Torrez by a little SS by the name of … you can say his name anyway you want
too, but I prefer to change the B in his first name to an F, and the D in his last name to a B.
From the 1967 team along for the ride with Yaz on Steve Tate’s 1970’s 3 Year Slice, are
Rico Petrocelli, George “Boomer” Scott, & Reggie Smith. They added HOF’er Carlton Fisk & a
young OF trio by the name of Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, and Dewey Evans who all put up decent
numbers in the decade. And God Forbid they have some speed with Tommy Harper on their
roster! Hitting has never been a problem in Boston … “it’s that DahhhhN pitching!” Luis
Tiant will be the ace and Bill Campbell will close. Other than that, every other spot is up for
grabs in Spring Training.
